What is the PFL's game plan in Africa?

PFL Africa will need to create local superstars if they are to succeed in Africa. This requires investment from the ground up.

Africa Sports Insider is the fortnightly(ish) newsletter for global sports brands wanting to grow in Africa.

The PFL has officially launched in Africa.

Indicators are that they are taking the continent seriously, even if their existing fanbase is low.

Here are my thoughts on the challenges ahead, and how they can succeed.

Talent vs Fandom?

I first spoke to the PFL around a year ago.

At that point it seemed that the league’s primary focus was on identifying African talent with the potential to become global stars.

This lean, talent-first strategy sounds similar to the NFL’s approach in Africa.

But recent moves, including last week’s media event in Lagos, suggest a more aggressive push to build a consumer audience in Africa.
